Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he finished.
