England along with Wales Drawn Together for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was conducted by rugby legends including two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with Wales find themselves placed in the same pool for the 2027 RWC, setting up a major pool stage clash in the tournament Down Under. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing mirrors their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at Twickenham contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Other Notable Group Pairings

Ireland alongside Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, just as the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they claimed a 36-14 win, with Scotland unable to progress to the quarter-finals.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both impressed as surprise packages in France, round out that same group.

Notably, the victors of both Pool D and Pool F are kept apart from defending champions and world number one the Springboks until the final, presuming the Springboks win their assigned pool.

Knockout Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current world rankings, other top favourites like the All Blacks and France would also be kept apart from the likes of the English and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Argentina would be the remaining highly-seeded nation on the same side of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Tournament Hosts Face Blockbuster Opener

Hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will open the tournament in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a blockbuster match designed to jump-start the event.

Elsewhere, holders the Springboks have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the USA and Manu Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Argentina will face the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the tournament grows to twenty-four nations from the twenty who competed in France.

This edition will introduce a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup existence.

Although the victor of England and Wales's group may avoid some of the rugby's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Pool B – probably Italy – in the last 16.

Four of the remaining six group winners will play a team that finished third from the pool stages.
