The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
