The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was anything but joyful this past Saturday. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in a long-running conflict with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Falling Apart?
Was the team's progress unraveling, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, only for him publicly stated that the board had omitted to inform him about a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti were just as chaotic during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or collapsing.
The Youngster's Surprising Comeback
One individual continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were attempting to remain there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.
Cancellieri arrived originally during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances for Lazio in 2022-23, almost all of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."
Discovering His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was still trying to work out the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as an attacking winger upon signing, Cancellieri instead found himself the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile in the striker role. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
