Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
