In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
