Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Players are granted the ability to challenge particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
